노래 가사와 뜻은 잘 몰랐지만 어릴 적 라디오에서 몇 번이나 들었던 멋진 후렴이 좋았던 노래(밤바라 밤밤 밤바~ 밤바라 밤밤밤~으로 시작하는The naughty lady of shady lane)를 늘 기억하고 있던 제가 또다시 멋진 노래를 포스팅 합니다.
경음악에서 노래로, 그리고 우리 나라에서는 다시 가사를 입혀 당대를 대표하던 여성 보컬그룹(李시스터즈, 丁시스터즈, 마운틴 시스터즈)들이 앞다퉈 불렀던 그 전설적인 노래를 밤바라 밤바~ 그 리듬감으로 이 노래도 또 그렇게 흥겹게 불렀으니 듣는 사람인들 어찌 어깨가 들썩들썩 즐겁지가 않았겠습니까~!!
1954년에 부른 "The naughty lady of shady lane"에 이어 1963년에 "Washington Square"를 부른 애임스 브라더스(The Ames Brothers)는 1950~60년대에 큰 활약을 한 친형제지간으로 결성된 미국의 4인조 보컬 그룹입니다. Joe, Gene, Vic, Ed가 멤버인 에임스 형제는 매사추세츠 주 몰든 출신으로 양친은 음악가였습니다.
형제들은 1950년 1월에 첫 히트 음반 "Rag Mop"으로 전국 최고 시청률을 기록한 뒤 나이트 클럽과 디너 클럽에서 최고의 유료 그룹이 되었고, 텔레비전에서 그 인기는 전국적으로 높았습니다.
함께 활동한 15년 동안 49개의 미국 차트에 올랐으며, 그 중 21개는 1953년 RCA 빅터와 계약하기 전까지 코랄 레이블에 이름을 올렸고 골드 레코드 6장을 낸 바가 있습니다. 이 4인조는 1963년에 해체되었지만 막내인 에드 에임스는 인기 있는 다니엘 분 텔레비전 시리즈에서 다니엘 분의 조수인 밍고 역을 맡는 등 성공적인 노래와 연기 경력을 이어갔습니다. 또한 1964년에는 플레이 보이紙의 인기투표에서 보컬 그룹 1위로 뽑히기도 하였습니다.

He also had a mighty voice, not to mention a car.
Each time he hit those bluegrass chords, you sure smelled mountain air,
I said, "Don't waste it on the wind. C'mon to Washington Square."
In New Orleans, we saw a gal a-walkin' with no shoes,
An' from her throat there comes a growl, she sure was singin' the blues.
She sang for all humanity, this gal with raven hair.
I said, "It's for the world to hear, C'mon to Washington Square."
We cannonballed into New York on good old US 1,
Till up ahead we saw the arch, a-gleamin' bright in the sun.
As far as all the eye could see, ten thousand folks was there,
And singin' in sweet harmony right in Washington Square.
Say how's about a freedom song, or the ole' "Rock Island Line"!
Or how's about the dust-bowl crop, or men who work in a mine?
